4.3 Classification of Animals
Sponges are simple, sessile, and mostly marine animals. They exhibit a type of asexual reproduction called budding, where a new individual develops from a small outgrowth of the parent. Water flows through numerous pores into a central cavity, from where it goes out through the osculum.
The body is covered externally by a layer called the pinacoderm, and the cells lining the inner cavity are called choanocytes.
